Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, defied an order by an Abuja High Court, as it commenced the screening of candidates vying for various offices for its forthcoming national convention slated for Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in Port Harcourt, the River State capital.

Recall Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, had on Monday, delivered an interim order stopping the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the PDP from going ahead with its plan to conduct the national convention of the party.

But the National Convention Screening Committee of the PDP, defied the order of the court, as it commenced the screening of about 57 candidates vying for various offices for its forthcoming national convention slated for Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in Port Harcourt, the River State capital.

The PDP National Convention Screening Committee led by the former Governor of Benue state, Gabriel Suswam on Monday, screened aspirants for the post of national chairman, including a former Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Chief Bode George.

The others are a former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, and a former Chairman of DAAR Communications Plc, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and PDP Lagos governorship candidate in 2015, Jimi Agbaje.

Meanwhile, apart from Gabriel Suswam who is the Chairman of the Committee, other members of the Screening Committee are a former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, former Imo Governor Achike Udenwa, former Adamawa Governor, Boni Haruna, and a former Deputy President of the Senate Ibrahim Mantu.

Others are Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe and a former Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Josephine Anenih as well as Rivers Attorney General, Chief Emmanuel Aguma, who is the Secretary.

In a related development, the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has vowed that the party’s national convention scheduled to hold on Wednesday, August, 17, 2016 would go on as planned.

Mr. Makarfi made this vow while reacting to the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which stopped the convention.

According to him, “The convention is going ahead as the Abuja Federal High Court is not superior to the Port Harcourt Federal High Court which earlier today gave us the go ahead. Court of Appeal will sort it out .” Makarfi opined.
