The National Caretaker Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, speaking during the inauguration of the party NEC in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
 The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), today, Wednesday, August 17, 2016, extended the tenure of Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee of the party by one year.

Makarfi’s tenure was extended by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party and given 12 months within which to organise the convention.

The decision to extend the tenure was taken at the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital during a meeting of the top party members including senators and governors of the party.

The National Executive Committee, NEC, include the Board : The PDP Governors, National Assembly Caucus , Board of Trustees, National Caucus, 36 State PDP chairmen and national officers of the Party.

The decision to extend Makarfi’s tenure was endorsed by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu as well as Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers as they  moved a motion that the caretaker committee should continue to remain in office.

Other members of the party supported the motion agreeing that the convention be moved to at least three months from now.

In response, the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Mr. Makarfi, accepted the extension with a promise that the party would come out of the crisis stronger.

Furthermore, the opposition party maintained that it it would use the extended period to continue to negotiate with Ali Modu Sheriff, the ousted chairman of the party who is currently in court to take back his position
